OUR STORY

My great aunt Gladys was a wacky old lady, even when she was younger. My memory of her always involved her wearing darkly tinted glasses and a similarly darkly tinted perfume. Those of you who hve been coming to the shop long enough probably know the scent. In some of the dustier corners of the place I think I can still smell it.

She loved her shop. It was her consolation for living a mortal life. She filled it with things that reminded her of the adventures of her youth, of the exotic world beyond Theopolis. Literature was her link to immortality. As long as they tell stories about us, we're never truly gone, she'd say.

I had almost finished hiking the Appalachian Trail when I found out my great aunt had died. When I came to Theopolis for the funeral, I was maybe more surprised that she had left her beloved shop, Thoth Spot, to me. There was only one condition: I wasn't allowed to change the name. I quit my job, moved to Theoplis, and tried to fill my aunt's complicated sequined shoes. The next summer I finished my hike, and scattered some of Aunt Gladys near the end before returning to Theopolis for good. I hope that's a story she can be proud of.

Today at Thoth Spot we try and manage the needs of a 21st century business alongside the ethics and eccentricites that Aunt Gladys lived by and that make the place great. We stock much of the New York Times bestsellers list as well as a multitude of classics, but we also keep a large and carefully currated collection of used and rare volumes. The textbook exchange program is always lively at the beginning and the end of the semesters for our customers attending and even instructing at the nearby Theopolis college, but we also do our best to maintain a collection of fairly priced used textbooks throughout the year.

Much of our used and rare material can be found on our recently lauched online store. In an accelerating world, we at Thoth Spot, while not interested in being left behind, still try and kick it back old school whenever we can. Come to us for a blending of antiquated class and the convenience of modern life. And stay tuned for our soon to launch events page, where we'll post about things we have going on in the store, including open mic nights and book signings.
